Love in A Puff (2010)

Love in A Puff (2010)
Director : Pang Ho-Cheung
Cast : Miriam Yeung, Shawn Yue

Try the trailer here. http://www.mediaasia.com/loveinapuff/tc_main.html

It's not ONLY a love story. Pang Ho-Cheung is delightful, as always. Shawn Yue has a certain charm in some strange way. I personally think Miriam gave her best ever movie performance here.

P/S : It's very HK production, no "bing-bing"s, Big-S or xiao ming and the gang. The movie title is a nice play of the Taiwanese Mayday's hit song but it has nothing to do with it.

I was in the Harris the other day and saw this particular book on the feature shelf with the other Twillightesque-Vampire books.

Social Network (2010)

Gage: Mr. Zuckerberg, do I have your full attention?
Mark Zuckerberg: [stares out the window] No.
Gage: Do you think I deserve it?
Mark Zuckerberg: [looks at the lawyer] What?
Gage: Do you think I deserve your full attention?
Mark Zuckerberg: I had to swear an oath before we began this deposition, and I don't want to perjure myself, so I have a legal obligation to say no.
Gage: Okay - no. You don't think I deserve your attention.
Mark Zuckerberg: I think if your clients want to sit on my shoulders and call themselves tall, they have the right to give it a try - but there's no requirement that I enjoy sitting here listening to people lie. You have part of my attention - you have the minimum amount. The rest of my attention is back at the offices of Facebook, where my colleagues and I are doing things that no one in this room, including and especially your clients, are intellectually or creatively capable of doing.
[pauses]
Mark Zuckerberg: Did I adequately answer your condescending question?

This one really made me ROTFL and crying at the same time. I have 4 more DVDs loaned from the library and none of them will be as funny as this. And MACC is wondering why they keep on losing their cases in court?
Even a school debate competition will be more interesting.

The Breakup (Not the Jennifer Aniston Flick!!!)

To the front of Wati who is now in Bukit Tunku, whom I hope is well.

Wati,

I think our relationship should end here. My love for you was real but I have been clapping with one hand. You were so mean to me at your becoming-day party, just because you were with your rich friends while I'm from a difficult family. I never know there was a prawn behind the rock all this while; you were using me to make your ex jealous! How my liver hurt when you showed your true self. I guess what they say is true: hornbills with hornbills, sparrows with sparrows. Let me now bring myself.

Maybe it was the Satan-water talking, but why did you have to call me such names? You dropped my face-water and scribbed charcoal all over my face. Once is enough. I don't want the banana to fuit two times.

I know I am just a dispatch guy I still have feelings. I thought you were my my liver-fruit but you saw me as just a pick-up brother at best and a joke at worst. All those times that we ate the wind at Lake Gardens, feeding the ducks and rowing the boats, I thought a love was blossoming. But you were planting sugarcane at your lips. I gave you my body and soul but after the honey had been extracted, the husk was thrown away.

What your friend Suzy said to me still plays in my ear, "Your fish-hook is so small, don't try to contend with the ocean!" How did she get the information about my fish-hook? Have you been telling stories from inside the mosquito-net?

I know my school is not as tall as yours. But I still have self-price. So just pretend I never exist in your life.

Yours in sadness,

Sham.

Karen Mok

As Yasmin Said....

" I have never believed that race was ever a real issue when people hated one another. I have always found, without fail, that racism was just surface stuff. When I scratched that surface and went just a little deeper, I invariably found that prejudice was rooted in more basic human weaknesses like fear or greed " ~ Yasmin Ahmad, The Storyteller August 2004

Packing & Moving 1

As I am packing my stuff, trying to throw out unnecessary stuff and keeping those worth keeping, I stumbled upon this farewell card I got from my ex-colleagues in J&J when I left 7 years ago. Reading what my ex-colleagues wrote made me feel warm and some left J&J already, some still there and some I still keep in touch frequently. Thanks for the memory.

July 2010 - Taiwan CSers

Met up with my friend, Chia Chun and her mates in Taipei. We were having Taipei old street walkathon & eat-athon around old Ximen area.

Pics above taken at the temple, the last pit stop of the tour after a sumptuous beef noodle (sorry, Cameron, we didn't know you are vegetarian) and a special local flavor traditionally made ice cream. Too bad the "po pi liao" was closed at night so we couldn't see the place where the latest Taiwanese box-office "Monga" was filmed.

As usual, it's great to catch up with fellow CSers and again, thanks to ChiaChun for such a lovely night. Your effort towards greener life is definitely commendable and I will emulate it wherever and whenever I can. I will start by having a pair of chopstick around with me!

And of course, to Ethan and Sappho, it's great meeting you guys. Ethan, I guess we will have more lengthy conversations if we have chance. And Sappho, enjoy your trip to Spore and Siem Reap! And yes, ChiaChun, I am happy that now Taiwan will be ready to take over %h^n& with the great Eslite bookstore!!!!!!! Conquer it culturally!!!!!!!!!

Good Night, and Good Luck (2005)

Good Night, and Good Luck (2005)
Director : George Clooney
Cast : David Straithairn, George Clooney, Frank Langella, Robert Downey Jr., Patricia Clarkson
Tagline : We will not walk in fear of one another

It's one the gem in my stash of DVDs and definitely a must-watch for journalist and media practitioners. Clooney proved his talents not only in his acting (Syriana, Up in the Air) but he wrote (with Grant Heslov) and directed this feature and was nominated generously though I would say luck was not in his side when it didn't win more awards as it should have (Straithairn had to compete with Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote). However, Clooney was rewarded with an Oscar by his turn in Syriana.

The movie reminded us on the McCarthyism and its universal danger itself. Shot in stylish black-and-white, it cleverly intersects with the live-footages and documentaries to portray McCarthy and a slew of real characters played flawlessly by an ensemble of amazing actors. The movie was cut into segments marked by a singing Dianne West and the jazz band was a brilliant play to the fact that each cut was exactly 23mins, which was the length of the TV shows such as the one portrayed in the movie during that era. I would say it's time well-spent!

From Malaysian Insider : Najib Says UMNO backs Singapore Deal

Kuala Lumpur May 27 - Datuk Seri Najib Razak declared today that he had obtained the backing of teh UMNO Supreme Council for the government's decision to relocate the Tanjung Pagar railway station in Singapore. Read more here.

And you are wondering who is the government of the day in Malaysia? You thought it's Barisan National (with its component party - which KJ said FAMILY)? Sorry, Malaysians. Now you know who rule your country and spend your tax money. I rest my case.

(My qualms above does not reflect my stand on the relocation decision)

Life of David Gale (2003)

The Life of David Gale (2003)
Director : Alan Parker
Cast : Kevin Spacey, Kate Winslet, Laura Linney
Tagline : The crime is clear. The truth is not.

I love this movie. As I was clearing a whole bunch of unwatched DVDs, I stumbled upon this little gem (I think it belongs to my best pal Sherry) which I didn't manage to watch using my old Akira DVD player (oh... Philip is good.... play ANYTHING). It had been quite awhile I didn't get the euphoria of watching a good movie, gripped by the tight plot and constantly asking what the ending will be etc and this just give all those to me.. in one go! And it's definitely the MOST underrated movie at all time as it didn't get anything, not even nomination in Golden Globe or Oscar!!!!!!!! Not only that; the general reception of the movie was poor too. Roger Ebert, the famous movie critic gave NO star to this and I just attribute this general poor reviews was due to the perspective of the movie trying to manipulate or exploit the issue of capital penalty. Go see for yourself!

Kevin Spacey is in his element and it's one of his subtly strongest performance. I forgive him for taking the villain role in Superman (or is it Spiderman?) if he keeps on taking roles like David. But of course, money is needed to do theatre. Kate Winslet and Laura Linney are having miles and miles of differences as actors but they shared one common trait, i.e. they are both very good in what they're doing. Winslet managed to be American (remember, this is before Revolutionary Road) and somehow I feel most British actresses have more trainings and kinda well prepared. Linney while being an American actress broke all the stereotype I had in my mind and I always enjoy her movies though I really cannot understand her taking on projects such as The Nanny Diaries with Scarlett Johannsen but I guess she gotta make some money too right?

Some interesting trivia; George Clooney and Nicholas Cage were the earliest choice for the role of David and THANK GOD they turned it down though Cage stayed as producer. Spacey is the best fit and I still get chills from his turn in The Usual Suspects. And Nicole Kidman was the first choice for Winslet role????? I mean, what happen to the producers and directors?

Memorable Quotes :

[Governor Hardin and David Gale are engaged in a debate on Batter's Box]
Governor Hardin: Alan (the debate moderator), let me say something I always say and I'm gonna keep on saying. And that is that I HATE killin'. That's why my administration is willing to kill to stop it.
David Gale: So, you don't subscribe to the idea that 'a good state is the one that protects its most despised members?'
Governor Hardin: It's a nice liberal idea. But, like most nice liberal ideas, naive.
David Gale: It's a quote from you, Governor. From your first state attorney campaign
Governor Hardin: [flustered] You've got me, Professor. But let me, in my defense, offer YOU a quote. Winston Churchill: 'If you're not a liberal at twenty, you have no heart, if you're still a liberal at thirty, you've got no brain.'
[studio audience laughs]
David Gale: So, basically, you feel, to choose another quote, 'society must be cleansed of elements which represent its own death.'
Governor Hardin: Well, yes. I'd have to agree.
[laughs]
Governor Hardin: Did I say that too?
David Gale: No, that was Hitler.

I couldn't help but thinking how interesting it will be if we can see politicians/activists/interested public debate on TV on policy and stuff but yeah... it's wishful thinking.

************

David Gale: [Giving a lecture to his college students] Fantasies have to be unrealistic. Because the minute- the second- that you get what you want, you don't- you can't- want it anymore.

************
Bitsey Bloom : Hate is no fun, if you keep it to yourself

And we are wondering why people gossip???

***********

David Gale: [while drunk] Socrates was ugly, Plato was fat, and, um, and Aristotle was a prissy dresser!

It's time to dig out the Greek philosophy text book!!!!!!!!

De-Lovely Mr. Cinema

De-Lovely (2004)
Cast : Kevin Kline, Ashley Judd, Jonathan Pryce

A look at the life of the legendary American composer, Cole Porter, whose hits were aplenty in the American Songbook Standards covered extensively by artists of the past and recent. Kline can really sing!!! And Ashley Judd is nothing but lovely. She reminds me of Angelina Jolie in Changeling as the movie started around the 30's era too. Great and entertaining watch if you love the standards. Contemporary artists such as Robbie Williams, Alanis Morissette, Diana Krall, Elvis Costello, Lemar, Sheryl Crow and Natalie Cole contributed their tribute to Porter and cameos as well. So, the soundtrack will be great!

Mr. Cinema (老港正传 Lou Gong Jing Juen) 2007
John Sam

The movie is definitely sentimental and feel-good bordering to tear-jerking. Ignoring the real and depth peek beyond the surface of the leftist movement in HK (Anthony's character is a leftist cinema operator), the wise decision that the director made was the right casting. Anthony, Teresa and Paw were rendering undeniably award-worthy performances and Ronald is proving that he can actually act, given the chance and space to do so. Few notable tear-jerking scenes from Anthony, Teresa and Ronald. Though it might not depict the whole era of HK with regards to the leftist movement or significant events in HK-China relationship, it gives a glimpse of life in HK, or rather the one that will never be seen again.

Sui Yuet Sen Tao (岁月神偷 Echoes of the Rainbow) will be a logical next to watch.

Shrek 3 - It's Funny

It's CATasthophically and riDONKEYlously entertaining movie. Worth it even no 3D in Sandakan cinema :)

Shutter Island (2010)

Shutter Island (2010)
Director : Martin Scorsese
Cast : Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams

Never really been a great fan of DiCaprio but Scorsese's repeated movies casted him made me intrigued especially this time. Give me something of the Girl, Interrupted kinda vibe. It's a thriller nicely done. Entertaining. Go watch it.

Stephen Hawking and District 9

Stephen Hawking is one of the best scientist in our world now. His recent feature in the Discovery channel sparks many interest around the world and yes, it's definitely worth paying attention to it than the endless fiasco of the stupid politicians in Malaysia.

And Hawkins is funny too. Besides warning us not to contact aliens because it might be dangerous, he quipped something about aliens appearance which to the effect of aliens not gonna look like Marilyn Monroe. Funny professor! Apparently Hawking love Monroe!

District 9 (2009)
Tagline : You are not welcomed here.

That prompted me to finally watch District 9, which had been in my collection for quite some time. And my verdict... fantastic! I really admire the creativity of the screenwriter and the director in the plot of the movie. And the special effects are special in the sense that it don't feels like special effect at all. A lot of undertone and subtext were being read on the premise of the movie touching issues such as discrimination and apartheid since the movie is based in South Africa.
Not to forget the subtext on the issue of weapon industry which coincidentally South Africa is also one of the big weapon producer.

Two thumbs up! Go watch it!!!!!!

It's Complicated (2009)
Director : Nancy Meyers
Cast : Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin
Quotes :
Alex :Is it really necessary for you to always say no before you say yes?
***

It's refreshing to sometimes see Streep in a non-dramatic role. This is one of them. Baldwin and Martin both showed their chemistry hosting the previous edition of Oscar.
It's a nice entertaining movie examining who we are in a relationship and how important to embrace that.
Have a good laugh!

Nine (2009)

Nine (2009)
Director : Rob Marshall
Cast : Daniel Day Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Fergie, Sophia Loren
Tagline : This holiday, be Italian

This movie proved 2 things :
1. All big names won't guarantee a movie's outcome.
2. Same trick won't work twice : Rob Marshall's previous work is Chicago.

Only Cotillard, Dench and Fergie shine. Others? Sorry.

(Updated)

I bought this out of curiosity. 郭敬明 is one of the top earning author in China.

To me, it's just brand name dropping (tonnes of Starbucks, Prada, Gucci etc etc) story; though not appealing to me, I guess it must be appealing to the younger generation in China now hence the popularity. And one thing I can't stand is that he mentioned about his name and books in his novel, a topic of conversation between the characters in his novel. Hmm... tak suka but that's my humble opinion only.

Yasmin Ahmad's Film - Amir Muhammad (Updated)

To those who likes Yasmin Ahmad's movie, it's a good read. Amir Muhammad gave his insights on the movies and many behind the scenes and all those why-why-why moments in Yasmin's movies.

P/S : Yes, my friend, I read your strawberries entry!

Whatever Works (2009)

Whatever Works (2009)
Director : Woody Allen
Cast : Larry David, Evan Rachel Woods, Patricia Clarkson
Quote : That's why I can't say enough times, whatever love you can get and give, whatever happiness you can filch or provide, every temporary measure of grace, whatever works.

Again, with Allen's movie, you either love it or hate it. No grey area what-so-ever. I have limited exposures to his movies, especially those during his funny glorious era but I did watch most of his recent movies including those with his latest muse Scarlet Johannson, (Match Point and Scoop), Anything Else, Melinda and Melinda, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Curse of Jade Scorpion.... But I still haven't watch original DVD Annie Hall (1977) I bought in Paris!!!!

If you watch his movies before and can take it, watch this as it's filled with so many "Woody-Allen"ness channeled through the main character played by Larry David, his alter ego!

If you can't stand movies with dialogues, no matter how funny they are.... avoid this at all cost.
