Her song from her previous album. Hauntingly touching. Nuff said.

Sun, Wind, Grassland and Ocean - A Celebration of Taiwan Aborigines Music of the Puyuma Tribe

纪晓君 (Ji Xiao Jun) I got to know her from the radio. I really forgot when I bought this but the album was released in 1999 which is my 1st year uni. So, it should be from the late night program which I always like to listen to in 988. Hmm....I think should be the DJ Ji Zan Xiong. Her voice captivated me the moment I heard the song Puyuma Homeland 故乡普悠玛 a song deeply ingrained in her Puyuma tribe root.

During my recent visit to Taiwan, Chia-Chun, my host from Taipei told me that 纪晓君 is actually Jia Jia's sister (家'家 of 昊恩家家 - featured in my previous post) !!!!!!!!!! No wonder it's not a surprise I was attracted to her voice and immediately want to look for their album, considering the fact that I only heard a few seconds of their songs during the 金曲奖 award show when they announce the nominess!!!! So, it's fated hehe.....

You can search for 纪晓君 in YouTube as well. Some live performances available.

So, now who's this uncle pulak? 陈建年 (Pur-dur, his tribal name) is actually another great singer from the Puyuma tribe and given that Puyuma tribe is a minority, even among the minority Aborigine tribes itself, 陈建年 is actually uncle of both 纪晓君 and 家'家. Like 纪晓君, I first heard the song 海洋 (Ocean)from the radio and it got me hooked to it already. The voice is so synonymous to the feeling of the song, and you can feel the ocean, the wave, the strong wind the moment the song is played. After I got the album (courtesy of Sherry who asked her sister to buy it from Taiwan - by the way, thanks Sherry cox I remember she bought the David Tao's 1st album from Taiwan for me as well cox at that time, no one knows him and his album was not released here) 乡愁 (Home Sick) really got me addicted. The song is so touching and melancholic suiting the theme itself and if you are really home alone in the foreign land, I think it's not a surprise if you find yourself shedding a tear listening to it. A little trivia is that he's actually a police. How cool is tat?

It's a great effort from the music label TCM (Taiwan Color's Music) to produce and release albums from these unique tribes in Taiwan, who's famous with their singing ability. The album by Pur-dur and HaoEnJiaJia that I owned were released by them and Bravo!!!

P/S : Aborigines in Taiwan are well known for their singing talent. Think A-Mei 张惠妹, Power Station 动力火车, Shan Feng Dian Huo 山风点伙 (Jeff, you should blog about them - remember them? 深藏不露。。。。。。), Zhang Zhen Yue 张震岳 and Landy Wen Lan 温岚 (some aborigine blood) etc...

昊恩&家家 vs Double Take

I mentioned in my previous posts on the CDs I bought from Taiwan [here] and the one that I took the pics with it as the background is the best among them all... oh yeah... even better than Tanya.

It's a group called 昊恩家家 (Hao En Jia Jia) which snatched the Best Music Performance of Group in the recent Taiwan Golden Melody Awards 金曲奖. Their album is the MUST-BUY item when I decided to visit Taiwan.

The verdict? I LOVE the album and so far, I burned a copy for my sister, Sophia (did I?) and also a treasured friend...hmm...also a few copies to be ready to pass to others. Yup, tat extend.

A search in the YouTube yielded in some very nice snippets of their performances in some Taiwan TV Variety Shows including the Kang Xi Lai Le 康熙来了 and Hei Si Hui Mei Mei as well as some launching mini shows in a bookshop, some concerts snippets and live performance in some intimate pub scene such as 女巫店。Speaking of which I have to check 女巫店 out the next time I'm in Taiwan.

Provided the link of some really nice YouTube here and enjoy.
This is from 康熙来了 and besides Hao En and Jia Jia 家家, they also featured 戴爱玲 (Dai Ai Ling) and 林凡 (Lin Fan), a funny segment indeed. 家家 did a version of "Close To You" and her low husky voice is very sexy.

All the above is their live performance in 女巫店.

This one is on Hei Shi Hui. I never really love the song 月亮代表我的心 (Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin) yup yup... I dun like overdone stuff but their "RnB"ed version is good. Well...way much better than David Tao's version in his previous albums.

Also in Hei Shi Hui where Jia Jia 家家 did 2nd vocal.

OK, why I drag Double Take here as well? I guess it's very obvious. They are very similar. I mean both are duo, with a female vocal and a male finger guitarist. And of course both 家家 and Mia Palencia have big voice and they both MESMERISED me.

Previous write-up of Double Take.

NOW MY WILDEST DREAM IS TO SEE THESE TWO GROUPS PERFORMING ON STAGE, JAMMING!!!!! Will definitely mention this to Mia's Brabon Entertainment. Maybe in next year's 2nd KK Jazz Festival?

Self-Search

Inspired by Alan's search of Coolie Sink's stuff on the internet, I did the same and found that this blog of mine was linked in Lluis Coloma's website, mainly on my write-up for the 2nd Miri International Jazz Festival. No wonder one of my friend said the same as well after self search on internet.

Here's their link on the page :
http://lluiscoloma.com/en/noticiaDet.asp?id=19 You can click on atanck for my write-up.

Thanks Lluis Coloma. I can only listen to your albums now.... luckily I bought 2 of them.

The Mission - liangmoi

As usual, all of liangmoi's friends will not be spared from being given a list of CDs or DVDs to purchase on her behalf and I, being labeled as the DHL of course is on-the-mission again.
The list as followed :
1. Eason Chan - What's Going On...?
2. Nicky Lee 李玖哲 - 想太多

4. Tackey & Tsubasa - Greatest Hits
5. Soler - 2x
6. 罗美玲 - 我是罗美玲
7. 藤木直人 - Turning Note

这位太太 - 是谁

蔡健雅 - Hello and Goodbye

Note that all the photos above taken with another album as background and it is the best album I bought this time, after having searching for their album unsuccessfully, rightfully deserve an individual post dedicated to it.

Singing Machine - Not Karaoke but Jaclyn Victor

When the 1st Malaysian Idol was in the rave few years back, I have to admit that I'm not a great Jac's fans. I mean, yes, she can sing and very well but somehow, she didn't get me hehe... But yes, she's the best singer of all the contestants and she deserved the winning to the dot.
So, when my friend, Brian invited me to watch her performance in Tawau recently, I was like... OK.... but agreed cox Juwita Suwito will be performing as well. It's like giving Jac a chance (haha.... like I'm somebody!!!)
So, how was it you may ask. She was great. I mean she can sing very well. Well-known for singing with her mic far from her mouth which I remembered during the Malaysian idol times, she did just tat. Another trivia is that she was really nervous indeed as she always mentioned during the Malaysian Idol times, which at that time, I doubted it BIG TIME since she sings in pub and stuff, no way she is nervous but she really did especially during the 1st song of her set.

Doing the sing-along gesture a-la Leon Lai Ming

She enchanted the audience with (surprise.. surprise!!!) L.O.V.E. (an old jazz standard), Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Satu Harapan (is it??? couldn't remember), Cepat Cepat.

What's a Jac's performance without her signature tune Gemilang right? She tried to work the crowd by asking us to sing "Gemilang" and "Reality" but tat didn't quite work hehe... shy I think. She did a splendid rendition of "Jesus Take The Wheel" as well, a justice to the original singer Carrie Underwood. And speaking of coincidence, she ended her set with "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys and just a week before that, the KK Jazz Festival I attended ended with the same tune as well!!!! Hmm...wondering what does that mean huh?

Autograph signing session.

Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival

Below are my 2 cents worth of opinion and they are strictly personal.
The festival scheduled to start at 6pm but recently, the sun sets quite late and at 630pm, the sky was still bright with the amazing sunset.

The festival was held at the Jesselton Point with its nice T-shape jetty.

The plane on the skyline. Amazing coincidence.

The 100 bucks seat near to the stage.

Another T area where the seats were located.

The show started with some local bands playing to warm the audience up. Personally, I think the 1st group not bad. The flute is a nice touch-up. Then another group incorporated the traditional Chinese musical instrument er-hu in its performance and that's a fresh take. Not a surprise though cox fusion is highly sought in music nowadays. Other notable performers; the set of the singer-songwriter from Labuan with his catchy tunes and Rimba, who was playing ethnic jazz (according to MC Jasmine) really showed that our local musical talents not only restricted to the SMS-hyped Akademi Fantasia, Astro Talent Quest and tonnes of other talentime reality show but there are other hidden gem waiting to be discovered and supported.

The Jazzelton Quintet. They were the first act and June was the vocalists cum keyboard player. They rolled out some notably standard jazz tunes started with Cheek to Cheek (heaven.... I'm in heaven.....) and an instrumental version of Have You Met Miss Jones? They ended their set with a surprise jazzed up version of the theme song the Flintstones. This managed to get the crowd in tune as some of the jazz standards played are not that familiar to the audience.

Then, my favourite act came out and do their thingy. Yes, it's none other than our local duo, Double Take, Roger Wang (guitar) and Mia Palencia (vocal). Mia had a flower in the hair (very much like the great jazz diva Billie Holiday in her glory days, nice touch Mia!!!) and she sang beautifully as usual though her voice doesn't comes off as powerful, maybe due to the microphone and the open air venue.

Mia got the crowd cheering with her rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow then moved to the next tune which she thinks all of us are familiar with. It turns out to be Bila Larut Malam...shobe do wa shobe do wa (imagine background vocalists of 3 ladies in fitted kebaya and shades, with their hands shaking left and right, their legs twisting front and back like in the P.Ramlee movies) and some of us (yeah... uncles and aunties, me included) recognized it.
Then Roger continued to dazzle us with his fantastic fingerwork on his guitar and Mia keep us on her string with their rendition of I've Got The World On A String. Of course they did! AND the crowd asked for more, chanting en core which the MC promised that they will be back for the finale.

Next is the Gambus-man Farid Ali. He jazzed up the crowd with his Middle-East-infused piece of equipment and provided some mystically enchanting element to the rather pop-infected concert. He sang some of the tunes as well, Getaran Jiwa that I remember.

OH yea.... how can Digi-Man be left out here? Thanks DIGI for being the main sponsor and yes, their coverage in Sabah now is way much better than their other Red and Purple rivals. And I didn't get sponsors or deducted bills from them. Though tat's kinda welcomed.

The final act was specially brought-in-from-US, Dennis Mininfield whose performing style is something akin to the great Tina Turner. Hers is fueled with energy and power, accentuated by her raspy vocal and it's not a disgrace her to quote reference to Tina Turner. She really worked out the crowd from the beginning with a powered-up version of The Way We Were (I have to apologize here... cox I couldn't be 100% sure. Correction appreciated). She went on to sing some signature sure-to-heat-up tunes and what a better choice than a party-tuned Yesterday from Beatles. Strictly-speaking, her choice of songs are not all that jazz but with the crowd worked-out and the fun that obviously everyone had, who cares? She interacted with the crowd well and children were invited to dance onstage with her, a group of Japanese tourists were invited to sing as well; everyone's happy. Of course party-goers and clubbers got their dose when she belted out Can't Get My Eyes Off You (ba lat ba lat ba lat ba lat..... I love you baby....) She sang Superstitious by Stevie Wonder too. It's obvious that she's a seasoned performer from her songs choice and the way she bantered with the crowd. And the crowd loved her too!!!

The much awaited finale WAS a let-down for me indeed. I mean, I was expecting some jamming sessions from all the vocalists and musicians but it didn't happen. Mia was given a mic and when Denise asked her to sing a song, which I hope to turn into some great duet at least... Mia just shook her head and I was disappointed. Maybe she didn't want to rope the attention from Denise's set but I think the better way to build up to the finale is that they sing something more high and the jamming of all the guitars or drums or bass to end it up. It's kinda awkward when Denise asked the musicians to drum up some tune and nothing came up. It was even a bit awkward when one of the guest sang To Love Somebody by Michael Bolton (OK... I'm from that era, betraying my age here). Not to say he's singing badly, in fact he sang it well (must be his karaoke yum go) but the song just didn't sound right for a much-awaited finale.

To save the silent (not that silent to be frank cox the music still playing) awkward moment, Denise sang Superstitious again and yes, this sounds more like a more apt finale. The Venezuelan percussionist from the previous acts Son2Nos were given a chance to showcase his mettle when he was doing solo; the sporting and highly-excited Datuk Adeline Leong had her share in the showcase too. Bravo Datuk for really showing enthusiasm for the music and as the co-organizing chairperson, Datuk is really into the music. My heart goes to Datuk who was supposed to be the 1st Mayor of Kota Kinabalu before being transferred to Sandakan. Oppss... that's another story. But Datuk, really respect you for the percussion showcase! The organizing chairman Mr. Fu got his share in showing his musical talent as well with the tambourine.

The night was a typical party night, went on to sing a Happy Birthday tune to one of the backstage organizing members. Denise said something about the importance of celebrating our birthdays and dun worry Denise, we Malaysian loves celebrating birthdays. Go to any of TGIF restaurants in Malaysia and 80% of the time you will get to hear the birthday-song-plus-We Will Rock You-come-with-the-foot-thumping-choreograph sang by the TGIF staff. I think that's a pre-requisite for the recruitment in TGIF.

The band who performed for Denise's set includes our very own Malaysian, the well-known Mac Chew. Those who's familiar with the Malaysia music scenes or buy CDs (original with lyrics booklets) will know who Mac Chew and how good he is. With his partner Jenny Chin, they are the frequent winner in the AIM (Anugerah Industri Muzik) and you can find their name in the albums of many Chinese singers, especially those with Rock Music (滚石). They are the frequent musical partner for Jonathan Lee 李宗盛.

Of course the crowd still wanted more when the finale was completed and as cliche as it can be, the crowd's wish was fulfilled and Denise came out to perform the last song. Before that, she parted some advice asking the audience to love ourselves. By loving ourselves, all the other love will come along the way. What song you ask??? One of my favourite song by the talented Alicia Keys If I Ain't Got You.

My Comment :

1. Seating should be arranged so that only 1 side stage as it's easier to manage. Put the food section in the covered area at the entrance not only easier for foodstuff buying (yesterday, you may have to walk to two area) but also from logistic point of view, moving the foodstuff to the stall will not disturb the audience, the trolleys moving, the staff carrying big tray.

2. Some audience who purchased 100 bucks complained that their view is blocked by the standing crowd in front of the stage where yours truly was one of them, admiring Double Take from near. How? One: no seats and same price ticket. Then you can choose to sit on the floor, lean on anything or stand or dance. But this will turn off many elderly and family with kids. Two: Prepare a dance area (or 摇滚区) where the dance enthusiast can swing and sway. More big screen so the audience sitting/standing far away will be able to see the performer (double joy of senses mah... though music more important here).

3. The MCs were a blessing for the sponsors due to their never-tired-attitude of mentioning the names of the sponsors. Great camaraderie I would say though personally I think Jasmine can cut down on defining the music as which category of jazz cox most of the time, it's hard to define the style as acid jazz, fusion jazz and etc. Just let the music speaks for its own. Also the first few sentences of Jasmine on what is jazz which she found out from the internet was redundant.

4. The tickets says the show starts at 6pm but the entrance and ticket checking counter was still not in place/in order when we went in at about 610pm. Seating especially the descending area next to the entrance should not be seated as it's crowding the whole area.

Kudos to the organizer for bringing our own jazz festival to KK and as a first instalment, this is really a great success. Improvement should come along and I strongly recommend that the next organizer should go visit other jazz festival such as the Miri International Jazz festival or the coming Penang International Jazz Festival. It's of course not fair since the place/venue is different but I think this current venue has it's EDGE and ADVANTAGE as the sunset view can be very nice and breathtaking. All it needs is just a little fine-tuning on the stage and seating arrangement. MY 2 CENTS WORTH OPINION

The First KK Jazz Festival

(article below by Lois Gilbert from http://www.jazzcorner.com/; photos are scanned orginal CDs of yours truly's own collection, ORIGINAL man!!!)
KK Jazz Fest promises to be world-class affair Kota Kinabalu:

The first-ever Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival promises to be a spectacular world-class affair and an opportunity to do your bit for charity at the same time. Audiences would be entertained non-stop from 6pm to midnight by more than 20 international, national and local musicians performing at the Charity Concert on Aug 11 (Saturday) at the historical Jesselton Point overlooking the idyllic South China Sea.

the debut album from Double Take; they mesmerised me the first time with Mengapa Kasih and after that, i was captivated

The five performing groups are Denise Mininfield (USA), Son2nos (Venezuela), Farid Ali (KL), Double Take (Sabah's very own solo fingerstyle guitarist Roger Wang and vocalist, Mia Palencia) and Jazzelton Quintet (comprising June Tan (piano), Professor Hanafie Mohd Imam (bass), Mohd Nizam Attan (violin), Vincent Chin (saxophone and flute) and Mohd Shaun Yazeed (drums)." The concert will feature internationally-acclaimed artistes like Farid Ali a.k.a. Mr Gambus (Malaysia), vocalist Denise (dubbed live-wire on stage), British-born jazz pianist Asif Pishori and youngest brother Imran (keyboards), and Venezuela's James Vielma (percussion/vocals) who has been involved in Latin Music from a very young age. (Son2nos also performed in the 2nd Miri International Jazz Festival May 2007).

the christmas album by Double Take; a nice take of the festive mood songs

The inaugural Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival is jointly organised by the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu, Society for Performing Arts Kota Kinabalu Sabah (SPArKS), Suria Group and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK). Main sponsors, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, will be giving away prizes during the festival. Other sponsors include HSBC (cash), Heineken (cash), Suria Group (provides the venue for free), DBKK (provides the stage and chairs for free), and Hotel Megah D'Aru (subsidised room rates).

Calling for public support, Organising Chairman Frankie K.O. Fu from the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu said the club has earmarked a number of community projects such as gravity feed water supply in Kota Marudu and Ranau, donations to poor schools in rural areas, and continuation of the Avoidable Blindness Programme. "While we inject a bit of excitement into the night life of KK City through the Jazz Festival, our thoughts will be on disadvantaged groups in need of help, anywhere in Sabah. "In this instance, music serves as a vehicle for us to raise funds for charity. For a start, we are targeting at 2,000 people to get them to patronise the concert for a noble cause," he said, adding that the festival has the potential to be a tourist attraction.

Co-Organising Chairperson, Datuk Adeline Leong could not agree more, emphasising the need to enliven the music scene in the city by introducing Sabahan musicians and music enthusiasts to the world of International Jazz Music. She said one of the objectives is to help raise the standard of musicians in Sabah by showcasing high quality performance. "With this musical extravaganza featuring local and international performers and offering a wide variety of jazz music, we hope it will create appreciation of this genre of music among the local population. "We (organisers) hope to make this festival of international standard an annual event in efforts to promote Kota Kinabalu as a centre for performing arts, in addition to the plan to make KK an educational hub. "That being the case, Kota Kinabalu would have a musical festival that residents can call their own," said the Protem President of SPArKS.

Meanwhile, Wang said the festival brings together a musical kaleidoscope of talents for the enjoyment of the public and education of our budding young musicians in the State. "Definitely, the event will reinforce Kota Kinabalu as a major international, regional and domestic tourist destination. We hope to incorporate the festival into Sabah's annual calendar of events. That way, we can tap into the burgeoning 'music festival' industry to generate an annual influx of regular visitors," he pointed out.

Tickets for the Aug 11 charity concert are priced at RM30 (students only), RM50 and RM100. Call 088-212121 (Sabah Tourism Sabah) or 088-235787 (Selina Yapp, Jesselton Point). Enquirers may log on to http://www.feeltone.com/. my/en/ for more information on the festival or call Sri Pelancongan (088-232121).

Xiao Yu - Ah Yue (小宇 - 张震岳)

Ah yue always strike me as someone who's good at ballad or touching songs. Surprised? Many will be influenced by his other noisy, loud and lyrically-offending songs but he has lots of slow tunes which melt hearts. Yup, many tend to remember his catchy 爱的初体验 (若你是我的洗发水。。。) or 分手吧 or the song tat catapulted Li, Xin-Jie back to singing, 自由 (zhi you), the offensive 放屁 (Fang Pi - Fart),我要钱 (Wo Yao Qian - I Want Money) or Free Night or 干妹妹 (Gan Mei Mei - God Sister), or the 18-SX ones in 0204 but his real captivating songs to me are always the slow numbers. His voice sounds quite sad but not too-over-the-top kinda feel, suits me well. His early works such as 秘密 (Mi Mi - Secret), 勇气 (Yong Qi - Bravery), 在凌晨 (Zai Ling Chen - Dawn), 爱我别走 (Ai Wo Bie Zou - Love Me Dun Go), 我会想念你 (Wo Hui Xiang Nian Ni - I Will Think of You) are some of my favourites and testaments to his versatility in his music talent.
He wrote many songs for other singers as well. Most of them were well received though many didn't realize it's actually composed by him. 我给的爱 (Wo Gei De Ai - The Love I Gave) by 杨乃文 (Yang Nai Wen - Faith Yang) and Let Go by Sandy Lam 林忆莲 are my favourites.

我不要最後才知道
(don't let me be the last to know)
我不要最後才知道
(don't let me be the last to know)
我永遠都不要知道
(I will never want to know)

You will know by now why I named the title of this post that way as you can from the lyrics of this particular song above, it's so corny and old-fashioned. Made you wanna cringe if it's spoken to you by your lover or partner or bf/gf/husband/wife.

I always stay away from songs with corny lyrics like this, if possible. Some other same examples are most of Ah-Niu's song, 小微 by 阿弟合唱团. But when Ah yue sang it, it gives another feeling and it becoming nice and smile-inducing one. It planted a smile in your face with a tinge of warmth in your heart? Did you? I did. :)

OK - 张震岳 (Zhang, Zhen Yue)

天真烂漫远了,愤世暴冲远了,彷徨迷惑远了,OK 的张震岳,就在这里。
The innocence long gone, the anger long gone, the dilemma long gone. The OK Zhang Zhen Yue, is right here.

Above is the promotional catch phrase for Ah-Yue's latest album. I heard the first song which featured one of my favourite songstress, 蔡健雅. First impression, 思念是一种病 so-so only. However I only got to listen to his whole album, thanks again to my dependable musics supplier, liangmoi. She bought the imported CD from Taiwan mind you!!! Good musics need to support the ori!!!

I played this album repeatedly during my 5.5 hours drive from Sandakan to KK and it was fantastic. The whole album is very old-skool feel (take this from liangmoi) but I guess I know what she meant by tat. It did remind me of old times schooling and free from troubling and complex matters messing our innocent mind. It's something soothing, easing and relaxing. No angry man screaming about the world's injustice, the political games or bad people roaming around hurting people but it's smooth with some tinge of melancholic feel at it. The melody of the songs are not "big-ballad-big-orchestrated-tear-jerking" type so it blends well with the slight sad lyrics. It's definitely in my 2007 Top 10 album.

1. 思念是一种病 featuring Tanya 蔡健雅 (Missing You is a Disease)

This song reminded me of "Where is the Love" from Black Eye Peas. Featuring the vocal of Fergie, the song has the same impact. Lyrics wise, it's talking about love as well. Smooth, nice and catchy. Hm... since when I kinda like rap?

当你在穿山越岭的另一边
我在孤独的路上没有尽头
时常感觉你在耳后的呼吸
却未曾感觉你在心口的鼻息

2. 你说有个女孩 (You Said There's A Girl)

Liangmoi's favourite. The smooth arrangement is very similar as his previous songs but the you can sense that the heavy sound had been toned down and replacing it is some nice vibe.

3. 路口 (Junction)

Sophia's favourite. Hmm.... tis gal had some change in taste I guess. The lyrics are nice but a surprise phrase which is vulgar to some innocent ears haha.... This is kinda a departure from his style which in his previous albums, he used to utter some profanities. The vulgar phrase he used in this song is actually not tat bad to me but maybe to other ppl. You may not notice it even cox it's embedded slickly in the lyrics.

(Lonely Night at the Sentry Post)

this is another post itself. love the song.

5. 再见 (Goodbye)

I think this is an old song but without the lyrics book with me, I can't really confirm this. The whole song has the 70's Mandarin folk song 民歌 feel with it. If I didn't listen to this is ah-yue's album, I would think that it's some songs from 锦绣二重唱 or something like that.

我会牢牢记住你的脸
我会珍惜你给的思恋
这些日子在我心中永远都不会抹去

Ah yue did another version of this song as well, the 11th track of the album which is slower and more 深情.

6. Others

Other tracks were excellent too with my preference given to the above. Of course there's a track collaborated with MC Hotdog and Hou Pei Chen 侯佩岑. Another track with some aborigines children singing as background vocal is a fresh take of his usually guitar-and-drum.
VERDICT : GOOD, VERY GOOD.

小情歌 - 苏打绿 (A Little Love Song - Soda Green)

Fresh from winning the 2007 Taiwan Golden Melody Awards for Best Group and Best Composer after scoring 7 nominations, A Little Love Song by Soda Green.

小情歌 - 苏打绿
A Little Love Song - Soda Green

Shopping Therapy - Prequel Part 2

Bought this is Miri while wandering around the Bintang Shopping Complex before bumped into Sabrina and her sister, Michelle who were there to attend their bro's graduation from Curtin U. Yeah, speaking about that, they haven't send me the pics we took together in the Grand Old Lady. Come on, send the pics, Sabrina!!!
OK, the album above is good. Sean is well-known in theatre which I had watched a few when I was still working in KL. He had a small role in Anna and the King, the Jodie Foster and Chow Yun Fatt edition too. Recently crowned as the Best Newcomer in AIM Awards, the album is a trip back to the nostalgic lane with tunes made familiar by P.Ramlee and gang. Some notable new tunes are Semalam and Kuimpikan Bintang which are the tracks that stand out. A cheeky fun song called "Dengar Ini Cerita" featuring Ida Nerina and Adibah Noor is no less fun than P. Ramlee's version in the movie Hujan Pagi. My personal fave is "Rambutnya Hitam, Matanya Galak".

Shopping Therapy - Prequel Part 1

The CDs were bought in Miri International Jazz Festival, both in 2006 and 2007. I bougt the Boogieology by Lluis Coloma in 2006 during the 1st festival and with their comeback this year, I bought their latest CD which "surprisingly" come with track No. 1 named "Goin' to Malaysia". Clever Coloma huh?
Bought 2 CDs of George Washing Machine as well. And I was delighted to know that the original song of P. Ramlee's, forgot the name was originally a folk tune from Italy called Isle of Capri dated back to 1934.

The Jack Johnson CD was bought in Hanoi, Vietnam. At USD2, the double CD was worth every single dollar I paid as it comes with a nice wooden packaging and lyrics.

Power Station by Maxis

Thanks to Maxis, Power Station was brought to perform in KK on June 9, 2007. Ticket available upon RM10 reload, which almost equate to free. The promotion was in haste and I think lots of people didn't know about it until it's too late. And for this case, the saying "good things didn't come free or cheap" is not that true anymore cox they're powerful, living up to their name.
The previous Astro Talent Quest winner Anthony Cheng from KK kicked off the performance. Saw his face in the background banner? Hm.... no comment.

Even if you didn't have the ticket, it's OK cox you can watch the whole concert nearby Padang Merdeka as it's open air!!! What a treat to the KK folks!!!

Phoebe (MyFM) was the MC for the concert and less irritating than the MC for the event who's in-charge of the pre-concert warm up and games session.

They belted out a list of their songs and the crowd obviously were their fans... and most of them were male audience! This is quite a rare instance as most of the time, the screaming concert go-er are mostly females while the males were enjoying and dancing if the tune is right. I guess Power Station is one of the rare group or performers whose songs were OK for the guys to like or be able to hum the whole lyrics of it without feeling embarassed about it! Even their less rock-heavy ballad numbers were well-memorised by the guys attending the concert, as proven by the loud guys singing crowd that night! Bravo!!!

Oh, they entertained the crowd request twice too!!! Firstly at the earlier part of the concert was "Chong Dong" 冲动. And towards the later part of the concert, they answered my request, yeah... MY REQUEST thanks to my loud shouting voice, they belted out half of "Thinking Of You is My Pre-sleep Habit" 想你是临睡的习惯

不甘心不放手
无情的情书
热情的沙漠
忠孝东路走九遍
你快乐所以我快乐
彩虹

I think I missed some of their rather new songs which I'm not that familiar.

It was a great mini concert and of course when it's free, it's even better hahahaha.....

Home - Chris Daughtry

You don't have to be a winner to score a hit album. Daughtry did it edging the more illustrated winner and final-3 of his season, Taylor Hicks, Katherine McPhee and Elliot Yamin.
And the reason for me to love this song? Maybe the title home struck some chords in my heart cox I love another song named Home by Michael Buble.
Home - Chris Daughtry

I'm staring out into the night,
Trying to hide the pain.
I'm going to the place where love
And feeling good don't ever cost a thing.
And the pain you feel's a different kind of pain.
I'm going home,
Back to the place where I belong,
And where your love has always been enough for me.
I'm not running from.
No, I think you got me all wrong.
I don't regret this life I chose for me.
But these places and these faces are getting old
So I'm going home.
Well I'm going home.
The miles are getting longer, it seems,
The closer I get to you.
I've not always been the best man or friend for you.
But your love, remains true.
And I don't know why.
You always seem to give me another try.
So I'm going home,
Back to the place where I belong,
And where your love has always been enough for me.
I'm not running from.
No, I think you got me all wrong.
I don't regret this life I chose for me.
But these places and these faces are getting old.
Be careful what you wish for,
'Cause you just might get it all.
You just might get it all,
And then some you don't want.
Be careful what you wish for,
'Cause you just might get it all.
You just might get it all, yeah.
Oh, well I'm going home,
Back to the place where I belong,
And where your love has always been enough for me.
I'm not running from.
No, I think you got me all wrong.
I don't regret this life I chose for me.
But these places and these faces are getting old.
I said these places and these faces are getting old.
So I'm going home.
I'm going home.

ENCORE SELECTION : Kenangan Terindah - Samsons

It all started when we sing the first 3 Malay songs.... from Peter Pan's , Glenn's to Datuk Siti's , we chose all Malay songs. And it's actually such a rare occasion that we can sing ALL Malay songs because normally our other kaki karaoke will despise such songs to be sang haha..... Of course we did sing some Chinese songs in between to neutralise the Malay flavour.

Looking at the list, we missed some notable songs which we always listen to or it's hip and popular during our primary school times. For example, we failed to sing other songs which is the same era with , groups like Spring, Damasutra, Slam, UKays, Ekamatra, Fotograf etc..... (I know some of you might be scolding us now hahahaha.....).

We also avoided some of the VERY VERY popular ones like which is not a quirky choice, at least our friends know about this song. That is why we ended up with songs like by Sharizan, by Candy which I am sure not known to a lot of people.

Due to the time limitations there were some selected songs that we couldn't sing to entertain ourselves such as:
1. Fiona – 4U2C
2. Untukmu Ibu – Exists
3. Puji-Pujian - Raihan

So, if you like Malay songs as well, not only the new current ones but the one of your era, please comment.
